Designed to mirror Evergreen’s mission to become the most environmentally responsible credit union in the nation, the new streamlined facility is being built to provide a central point of service for members living throughout the Appleton area while introducing a growing population of environmentally-conscious consumers to Evergreen’s uniquely personal, technical, and eco-friendly approach to banking. Expanding to better serve the community, Evergreen president and CEO, Kathy Jankowski notes, “We’re building a future that will improve our ability to help our members.” With groundbreaking scheduled for June 2020, Evergreen is anticipating its grand opening in January 2021.

Evergreen Credit Union’s offices do not look like other financial institutions. With almost 200 solar panels generating over 80% of the building’s energy, the home office is an actual shining example of Evergreen’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The smaller Appleton branch will have significantly fewer panels, but is, according to Evergreen’s marketing and sustainability manager, Roni Kasperek, optimized for 100% renewable energy. Additional eco-friendly elements of the new branch include rain barrels, a bike fix-it station, an electric/hybrid car charging station, bird-safe windows, and exterior stone that’s certified as sustainably produced.

Evergreen’s commitment to the environment does not stop at the entrance. “Almost everything going into the building has some level of environmental certification,” notes Kasperek. The flooring tile was made with post-industrial recycled content to ensure 100% recyclability. Some countertops are made from reclaimed wood, while others are made with specialty laminates that are certified as low-emission to reduce indoor air pollution. Massive skylights provide natural lighting for lobby and transaction areas, while regular windows feature solar shades selected for preventing heat gain, lowering cooling costs, and meeting rigorous standards for chemical emissions. Lighting, where needed, will be energy efficient, while sinks and toilets will be low-flow for water conservation.

The “new face” in the Appleton financial community, Evergreen Credit Union is actually over 60 years old. Founded in 1958 as Wisconsin Tissue Employees Credit Union, today’s Evergreen Credit Union welcomes everyone who lives and/or works in Winnebago, Waupaca, Waushara, Outagamie, and Calumet Counties. An uncommon blend of old-school service and modern-day technology, Evergreen offers financial guidance in person and by remote. “We’re in the office to help when people are unsure, and on our app to support their everyday needs.” Kasperek adds, “And we do so in a way that, we hope, sets an example; that service does not need to come at the expense of sustainability.”
